Large Industrial site heating project
The client has a Waste Incineration / Pyrolysis plant and wanted to recover the waste energy to heat water, that they could then use in a Ring Main, that provides hot water for their large industrial site.
Econotherm® provided a large exhaust gas to oil (GO) heat exchanger, that was capable of handling the hot exhaust gasses that had a significant quantity of particulates in them.
The client has a Waste Incineration / Pyrolysis plant and wanted to be able to recover the waste heat in the exhaust gasses.
This had some difficulties in that the exhaust gasses were hot, up to 850ºC, and were heaviliy laden with particulates.
The customer wanted to use the heat recovered to provide hot water, that could be used in a Ring Main that ran around their large industrial site.
In addition they wanted to have the facility to run thermal oil in the Econotherm waste heat recovery unit, so that they could supply this to an Organic Rankine Cycle engine, which would also generate electricity.
Econotherm® gas to oil (GO) heat exchangers are designed to heat thermal oil using the waste heat from a variety of exhaust gas sources. The hot thermal oil can be used in an industrial process, for input into an Organic Rankin Cycle (ORC) engine to generate electricity, for building heating etc.
Available in a range of standard sizes from 30 KW to several megawatts thermal duty, they can be configured to operate in a range of environments including those not suitable for classical exchanger designs. Econotherm uses a patented smooth / finned hybrid heat pipe in most gas to oil applications. Under certain circumstances where the exhaust is very clean, for example a natural gas exhaust, it is possible to use finned / finned pipes to optimise size and cost of units. The GO exchangers can be made of stainless or carbon steel to suit the specific application.
GO exchangers are offered as highly cost effective energy recovery solutions offering many benefits over alternate non-heat pipe based designs:
1. Lower cost on a £ per KW recovered basis
2. Superior thermal transfer ensures smaller exchanger size
3. Isothermic operation, a characteristic of heat pipe based heat recovery units, enables Econotherm to heat thermal oil to higher temperatures than is normally possible; without the charring and degradation of the thermal oil.
4. High reliability through intrinsic redundancy from multi-pipe design, i.e. a single pipe failure will not significantly affect the exchanger
Impact on economy The client was able to save over 7,500mWhours of gas per annum, that was previously required to heat the water that circulated in the industrial site ring main.
Impact on culture The installation of this unit has been shown to many people in the UK municiple waste industry, which has educated them on possible uses for the wasted energy from the burning of waste.
Impact on ecology The unit saved over 7,500mWhours per annum.
