Introducing "EKO ON THE GO" Hotspots
Imagine a Lagos where everyone was able to experience the empowerment that a truly free internet experience offers. We propose such a Lagos.
Imagine a city where the latest movies, the hottest music, and the most educational information were available similar to the traditional radio wave and also monetized for creators. We propose such a city.
Our simple solution uses a newly available African developed technology to do just that. OTGPlaya proposes to deploy a network of internet broadcast ‘boxes’, each no larger than a household DVD box, in and around the most highly trafficked areas of Lagos. From each box, we will broadcast an ultra-high speed, 100% secure, wireless internet cloud that is OPEN and FREE to anyone in the area on their existing browse enabled mobile device.
Further, we will gather, sort, and distribute catered electronic information such as entertainment media, educational content, and business improvement information. The Internet affects every day aspects of society from education and citizen involvement to health and entertainment. Books, journals and newspapers are being replaced by electronic versions and superseded by Internet sites. The technological advancement of our solution now allows every Lagos citizen to freely access the wealth of electronic information. Most contents will be Ad supported; premium content may be monetized by the creators. This ensures the digital gap does not persist for Lagos and African cities!
Problem Face it. Today’s internet in even the largest most developed African hub cities sadly lags that available and used in developed capitals around the world. Lagosians don’t benefit from the information available online because they mostly all lack adequate infrastructure (frequently interrupted power and low bandwidth in most areas). To make this problem worse, if they do have good power and bandwidth, they have to pay exorbitant prices for devices and internet access. As a rule broadband access is expensive and entirely dependent on monopolistic telecoms companies, and quality technology and devices are not affordable at cheap prices. Even when afforded, the lack of persistent power often denies their use. This problem of access, cost and low power availability leads to the lowest Internet penetration rate among the world’s existing mega-cities. This makes the delivery of content a major obstacle. Statistics show the level of penetration is as low as 28% within Nigeria while the country ranks 3rd in the world for sub-standard Internet speed which means that even when there is Internet coverage it is often incapable of faster more inclusive and interactive services. Plainly stated, too many Nigerians find it impossible to watch popular YouTube clips of their favorite Nollywood movie! This Problem is now solved through OTG Playa’s simple city wide Wi-Fi Solution called “Eko On The Go!”
Solution OTG Playa presents a simple, feasible, tested, and completely interchangeable solution modeled after an African rain storm which traditionally brings relief and improved productivity for a thirsty land. The core of the system is our proprietary patent pending technology and device, the Storm, designed and manufactured in Austin, TX, USA. This device generates a secure coded wireless signal that is detectible and accessible by laptops, PC’s, phones, and other devices. Users freely and easily interact with digital information at speeds 5x faster than anything available in Lagos today. By sending out its own signal, users bypasses the limited ways of accessing internet content through costly mobile plans etc. Where other solutions merely harness existing bandwidth, OTG creates a new highway for users to get to tailored internet content. Each device can be used for 48-hours fully after a complete loss of electrical power. This far exceeds other available solutions (avg 8-hr battery). Each device also acts as a network hub for other nearby devices, even user devices. A business person in Lagos can read news on his own phone from a nearby STORM, while his phone broadcasts other content (movie or music) to other nearby users. This effect is multiplied and creates a CLOUD similar to a large rain cloud. Our device will be located in strategic locations like schools, community centers, public spaces and cafes creating hotspots, standalone WI-FI, and server storage all over Lagos.
Impact on economy
Eko On the Go provides new economic benefits within three key public industries s: ICT, Entertainment, and Media. With the powerful dedicated OTG network enabling connectivity around the city on a virtual cloud, new and powerful applications and software that serve the public good can be built by engineers and computer scientists. In addition, the development, maintenance, and use of these applications will provide job opportunities for many Lagosians. This is a tangible economic benefit, in addition to the harder to measure but related hundreds of jobs that will be created as businesses are built around the platform and its capabilities.
The OTGPlaya Platform allows Nollywood and the Lagos based entertainment industry in particular to finally solve their long standing challenge of efficient, secure, affordable content distribution. Presently, movie consumers are forced to buy content on DVD’s as there is no reliable, affordable, electronic distribution medium. Due to rampant DVD piracy, Nollywood itself is unable to fully monetize their product. OTG distributes directly to consumers and thereby bypasses the DVD and therefore cuts out the DVD pirates. In 2011, 50% of the $1.2 Billion revenue in Nollywood (CNN estimate) was lost to piracy. Our solution captures much of that lost revenue and allows Nollywood producers to release securely and directly to users. Our agreement with Virtual Media Limited demonstrates this model can work.
Impact on culture Lagos is known for its rich culture and potential appeal to tourism. Lagos state Mega City Project is not only directed at Investors but also Tourists in order to boost the local economy and showcase its rich culture. The Eko on the Go solution will bolster the Mega City Project, and further deliver the benefits of culture and tourism to Lagosians and visitors alike. Native applications for tourism and native pages to disseminate cultural information will be developed by entrepreneurs and government agencies alike to take advantage of this open platform. People anywhere in the City can access and watch cultural content stored and in real time as cultural events are taking place. This will create a feeling of unity and connectivity that is the cornerstone of a strong culture.
Impact on ecology Eko On the Go is an open platform environment that will encourage native applications development that will bring people together without traditional modes of transportation. One can imagine a Traffic Application being developed on this platform and accessible across the city of Lagos; a social networking app that brings closed group members together will also encourage teleworking- thereby reducing traffic and impacting the environment positively
Impact on politics
Eko On the Go will connect the governed and the governing. With a platform for disseminating public affairs messages, engaging the public will be easier and seamless for government officials. As indicated, we’ll locally host the Lagos State Government’s website and public affairs page (later, may require minimum redesign) and also encourage open platform development of tools such as BudgIT, and OpenInfo that offer relevant public policy information and promote good governance.
Eko On The Go will also be deployed with the power of Content Partnerships developed by OTGPlaya to date. OTGPlaya has access to a rich library of Nollywood movies and TV shows through Virtual Media Limited, one of Nigeria’s leading Production Company. Through OnlineNigeria.com we even have a deeper library of older movies released since the inception of Nollywood. We have also partnered with eTap.org, a provider of education content and access from key content owners like Khan Academy as well as other proprietary sources. This ensures that Eko On the Go will be a magnet for entertaining and educating young people, all of which contribute to strong, informed political participants.
