SKYBUS
Skybus Lavasa (India)
STAGE 4:   CONFIRMED PROJECT PLAN

Skybus is the smart "à la carte" microbus service that takes passengers where they want at the time they want, sharing the trip with other passengers with similar trips.

the skybus saas platform manages web & mobile trip requests, allocates them to vehicles and adapts routes in real-time, taking passengers to destinations in the fastest possible way.

personalised, convenient and low-cost, skybus is the sustainable alternative to private car for commuting, specially suited for those who live & work in peripheric areas. as a smart complement to existing radial public transport networks, it connects directly and flexibly sparse outlying residential areas with suburban business parks.

skybus can also be used for elderly & disabled, nightlivers & football fans, school kids & teenagers, tourists & mobile workforce.

skybus can quickly reduce oil consumption, pollution, greenhouse emissions, noise, traffic, time loss, stress and car accidents in cities. it can relaunch the road transport industry and generate hundreds of new jobs, by replacing oil imports & empty cars by locally-served professional transport.

skybus can be deployed within weeks with minimal upfront investment. our customers are cities who want to expand public transport outreach in a profitable manner, bus companies who want to optimize their costs, and enterprises who want to offer sustainable, high-quality and cost-efficient transport to their employees.

Challenge

CITIES struggle to reduce car usage as their main source of pollution, emissions, noise, stress, accidents and regional expenditure in external energy supply.

LOCAL & REGIONAL GOVERNMENTS need to provide public collective transport to expanding sparse suburbs in a profitable manner (the “last mile problem”). In developed countries, they suffer budget shortages for transport (1,5 €B in Madrid) while in emerging countries, monster traffic jams & lack of transport infrastructures (undergrounds, trains, roads, tunnels) are already obstacles for socio-economic growth.

NATIONAL GOVERNMENTS in most countries have plans for reducing the energy bill (Spain targets 11.5 €B reduction by 2020).

ENTERPRISES, BUSINESS PARKS & INDUSTRIAL AREAS located in outskirts suffer severe traffic & parking problems (Telefonica HQs receive 7500 daily cars for 4000 available parking places).

PUBLIC & PRIVATE BUS OPERATORS suffer losses in most bus lines due to high fluctuations in demand. They look for flexibility to improve vehicle productivity. European bus services industry is decreasing.

CITIZENS who live & work in suburbs are captive of their cars to commute (avg. montly cost above 400€) and go out at night (crashes are 6th most common cause of death in developed nations). World population is ageing and requires accesible transport with professional drivers (Spaniards over 65 is expected to exceed 30% by 2030. 40% of accidents involve drivers above 65)

Solution

Skybus is the new urban transport by means of intelligent, on-demand collective vehicles which take each passenger directly from origin to destination, minimizing pick-up and trip times for everyone.

Skybus transport is implemented thanks to the Skybus SaaS Platform along with Skybus’ Professional Services.

SKYBUS SAAS

It’s the world’s most advanced Demand-Responsive Transport platform, sold as a software service completely managed by Skybus. It comprises:

- The Skybus Datacenter, a high-performance computing engine, which leverages Skybus’ groundbreaking optimization algorithms

- Passenger Applications for booking and self-management (web, mobile and call-centre)

- On-Board Terminals to give instructions to drivers and manage the vehicle fleet, remotely coordinated by a central server.

- Management Applications for monitoring, reporting, QoS management, and other functions.

With Skybus SaaS, cities and companies can start offering Skybus' flexible transport to citizens and employees within weeks. There is no need to launch complex and expensive technology projects.

SKYBUS PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

They allow our customers to confidently launch & operate Skybus transport, through the following steps:

- Planning, analysis and modelling

Economic Impact

CITIZENS can save € 100s every month by replacing cars & parkings with Skybus. With a typical cost of 3€/trip in Spain (120€/month), Skybus is much cheaper than private car (avg. TCO 400€/month) specially for those who live more than 20 kms away from office.

PUBLIC & PRIVATE BUS OPERATORS can improve their business by expanding their coverage with the same cost, by optimizing existing route networks, and by deploying premium near door-to-door services. Skybus can stimulate the road transport industry towards growth.

ENTERPRISES, BUSINESS PARKS & INDUSTRIAL AREAS can save in parkings by promoting modal change from cars to Skybus. By aggregating demand from neighbour companies into a “Skybus pool”, transport productivity grows exponentially, allowing better services at lower costs.

MOBILE WORKFORCES, SMES, SOHO & FREELANCERS can continue working on the way to their customers thanks to Skybus free WiFi connections, increasing their productivity.

LOCAL GOVERNMENTS can extend public transport to new areas, increasing usage & revenue for the overall public transport system. The regional economy will replace petrol imports by locally-served professional transport, improving the region’s import/export balance, and creating new jobs for low-qualified workers.

NATIONAL GOVERNMENTS can quickly reduce petrol bills, increase productivity and competitiveness, raise GDP and reduce unemployment rates thanks to Skybus effects in all of the aforementioned sectors.

Community Impact

COMMUTING is the main reason for mobility in cities. Skybus is thought for this: as a realistic alternative for those who don’t have currently other choice than their car to get from home to the office.

MOBILE WORKFORCE, SMEs AND SOHO. Professional mobility accounts for 20% of daily trips in many cities. Skybus provides a way to save in transport expenses and to take advantage of transport time to continue working. This is specially important for SMEs, SOHO and Freelancers (90% of Spanish economy).

SCHOOL KIDS & TEENAGERS. Skybus can reduce route times, enforce safety and avoid parents acting as private drivers for many activities including education, sports and leisure.

NIGHTLIVERS. With road safety a main concern regarding citizens who go out at night and drink alcohol, Skybus is a convenient and low-cost alternative that fills the gap between cheap but unconvenient night public transport, and exclusive but expensive taxi rides to peripheric areas and towns far away from city centers.

ELDERLY & DISABLED, an increasing sector of population with special needs in terms of accesibility, safety and dependency. Intermodality and scalators are not for them, and many should not drive. Taxis are too expensive for daily use. Skybus is their alternative for a more independent living.

TOURISTS. Airlines, railways and ferries have in Skybus’ ability for low-cost capillar distribution a great allied to increase tourist flows between cities.

Climate Impact

Thanks to its potential for modal change from private car to collective, mass-customised transport, Skybus has a tremendous capability to quickly reduce traffic, emissions, pollution, oil consumption and noise in cities.

A study by Jouni Tuomisto y Marko Tainio “An economic way of reducing health, environmental, and other pressures of urban traffic: a decision analysis on trip aggregation” (BioMed Central, November 25, 2005) shows that a large-scale deployment of on-demand transport such as Skybus in a city of 1 million inhabitants could capture up to 50% of car drivers without the need of external public funding.

Skybus own estimations suggest that it could be possible to reduce up to a factor of 5 the number of vehicles required to serve a city’s mobility requirements with an appropriate DRT scheme, depending on factors such as quality of road network, quality and prices of public transport, city topology and city density.

In addition, the Skybus SaaS platform tracks how many kilometers of private car trips have been saved for every passenger and day. Accordingly, Skybus provides our city & enterprise customers objective measures about how much they are improving the environment in terms of:
- reduction of carbon emissions
- reduction of polluting agents
- oil savings
- number of kilometers-car saved
- improvement in traffic flows
