CITIES CALL FOR SOLUTIONS:   16/22
Green Homes Network
Rosario Argentina
SUMMARY
Rosario is looking for ways to encourage households to join the Green Homes Network initiative and to monitor its environmental impact.

The Green Homes Network is an environmental education programme set up by the Municipality of Rosario to promote sustainable living. The aim is to raise awareness, inform and provide tools to citizens to make the domestic behavioural changes necessary for environmental sustainability. The programme encourages households to move towards more responsible home management by introducing energy- and water-saving measures and by guiding them to more ethical, environment-friendly purchasing and behaviour.

Several institutions are involved in the Green Homes Network, which was launched in mid-2012 and has already engaged 365 households, organized in 10 groups; more groups are being created as more families join. Each group works as an environmental promoter, to share experiences and engage more families. In this way each household and group is part of a larger movement, capable of creating a more sustainable economic, environmental and social model.

Households are given training in five main areas:

  • waste management in the home
  • electricity saving measures
  • reducing water consumption
  • promoting home composting and organic waste
  • encouraging more sustainable mobility

The City of Rosario wants to attract more households to become involved and so increase the environmental impact of the programme. It is looking for ways to motivate families to participate with exciting and engaging ways of being involved based around the five themes given above. The city also wants to capture the data and measure the impact of the behavioural changes.
